How to make ceilings appear higher.

Ceilings may be made to appear higher by a number of methods.

Ceilings can be made to appear higher by running a wall color or covering a short distance onto the ceiling, especially when corners are coved. This treatment causes the eye to move upward and the illusion of height is created.

A predominance of vertical lines in the walls of the room and in the decorative elements such as artworks will also contribute to the feeling of height.

Gabled ceilings can be made to appear even higher when diagonal beams which draw the eye upward are used.

Paint your ceiling a color lighter than the walls, preferably white. Paint the first two or three inches of ceiling around the perimeter the same color as the walls to give the illusion of taller, higher walls.

Hang window treatments as high as possible. Floor-to-ceiling curtains elongate a room.

Use lower profile furniture with fewer horizontal elements (arm rests, for example) to emphasize the distance between the furniture and the ceiling.

Give your ceiling high gloss. This creates an illusion of endlessness. If a ceiling like the one here is too dramatic for your tastes, use a semi-gloss paint instead.
