Kibaha district council wants to extend its services of marketplace at Coast Region level. Their vision is to “bring market services of regional standards within the reach of every individual. They are committed to the achievement and maintenance of excellence services for the benefit of humanity”. Kibaha district council choose maili moja, as the area for the project basing on the fact that most people in our country will easily access the services and connections to other regions i.e. all means of transport are well connected to other part of the different areas.
Marketplaces are seen to function in a complex way. They often change in terms layouts or trading zones at different times of hour, day or even seasons.
“I want to design a market which is flexible in terms of its use so as to move well along with the different customers at different times”. Said Zahoro Seif
The market will comprise of;
- Whole sale space
- Retail space
- Supporting facilities such as; offices, parking, toilets, restaurants. etc.,
The building was designed is such a way that there is no collision between whole sellers and retail sellers. There is ease accessibility for vehicles, residents, traders and customers. “The building is a magnet; everyone is attracted to his/her own specific area. From the entrances, retail buyers will be attracted to retail sellers, and retail sellers are attracted to whole sellers who are at the centre of the structure” said Zahoro Seif.
The building form allows maximum light and air within because it has large openings with large span roofs. The structure is in three types, i.e. closed fixed structure, and open - sided fixed structure and semi - fixed structure.
The central structure has 3 buildings of 2,3 and 4 stories. “I did that because I wanted to bring new architecture to the area, as you can see that the structure is complex with different levels and hyperbolic roof, that brings the sense of complex structure” said Zahoro Seif
The proposed market and trading center aim at solving challenges of zones and layouts due to ever changing of times in terms of the day and seasons, i.e. in terms of usage, space organization and space evolution. To archive this, the building consider the organization of marketplace and functional in different ways.
