How to make small space looks bigger
In many cases we have found ourselves in small spaces, either it is a bedroom, lounge, toilet, corridor or office. There is a psychological effect if someone is feeling to be in a small space. The activities which are taken by someone who feels he is in a small room won’t be taken well. Example, someone who is working in small office, obvious won’t perform as required.
Can a small space made up of full wall appear bigger without demolition? The answer is YES! There are some architectural tricks which can be employed, and make the small space appear bigger. Here are some of them;
- If the room has windows, make them bigger so as to bring all the outside to the interiors. This will help to the flow of spaces from inside-out. Also bring natural light to the inside as much as possible.
- Use the light colors on walls and ceiling, use light colors or neutrals throughout; as they are space expanders and provide a neutral background for furniture and artwork. If possible use the same color in both planes (wall, ceiling and floor).
- If a room has furniture example, an office or living room, it is better to use furniture with exposed legs and arms. Sofas and armchairs that are raised on legs create a sense of light and space; therefore they are more preferable for small rooms. Also consider using multifunctional furniture, such as ottomans, which could be used as coffee tables or sitting area. Pushing furniture up against the wall makes everything look and feel cramped. Even just few inches in between the wall and your bigger items can make the space look more open.
- Employ an open design whenever possible. For this case it is more applicable in lounge, dinning and kitchen. Do not put any partition between these spaces, this trick makes the space appear bigger.
- If you use tiles as floor finish in a small space, try to use small size tiles. Small sized tiles, example 250 x 250 mm are good in small spaces rather than 600 x 600 mm tiles. The many the tiles the bigger the space and vice versa is true.
- Use strips to elongate the spaces, either vertically or horizontally. Just like vertical stripes on clothing, a striped rug will make your room appear longer. Orient the stripes to go the length of the room that is the longest for optimal effect. Vertical stripes on wall will make the room taller with huge headroom.
- Installing an oversized mirror or a set of smaller mirrors will add extra light, sparkle and make a small room appear larger. This trick is employed much in barber shops. To have a mirror run from the ceiling to the floor tends to make a small room appear bigger.
