National Art gallery at Mnazi Mmoja.

Location: mnazi mmoja, Dar es salaam

Designer: Omari Mwenunge

Status: proposal

From the architect: Tanzania is among of the countries in the world which was originally famous in visual arts. This is proved by the existence drawings in the caves in kondoa irangi, showing the participation of our ancestors in visual arts as the tool of educating, aesthetics creation and enjoyment in a public. So caves were used as their art galleries. People who are dealing with art works are very important to the society as aesthetic creation and enjoyment, form of human appropriation wage labor and artistic activities. Sometimes arts influence development and gives information.

The government has been struggling to develop its culture since 1962 and decided to incorporate culture in its National Art Council act of 1984 and government policy. It seems that there is a need of making sure artworks are performed as public entity. There is a need of having a strong relationship between art and public. The only area which we can achieve this quality is inside art galleries. Through these galleries different works will be presented to the public. This will motivate local artist to have the area of advertising their works and boost tourism. The proposed art gallery will be located in mnazi mmoja(city centre) where by many people can access the building.

The building will consist of exhibition space, art classes, resource centre, restaurant, curial shop, conference hall, studios, workshops, offices, library, theatre and public venue.

The form of the building was inspired by Mount Kilimanjaro, which is the public entity in Tanzania. The building is rising from the ground and become smaller to its peak. It is like closed ribbons (made up from ETFE plastics) which form descending circles from below. There are skylights in above of each ribbon to bring light within. The art gallery brings the sense of public since it attracts people by its form and its two main attractive entrances. One entrance leads to the public venue and the other one leads to the exhibition spaces.

Inside the building from the main entrance there is ramp and panoramic lift which takes people from ground floor to the floors above, so people can move vertically to the exhibitions above by using ramp. All other activities apart from exhibitions are put to the edges of each floor, so as to use space effectively. The other entrance leads to the public venue and theatre, it has a good combination of ramp and stairs which takes people to the level of entrance. The landscape has furniture and water fountains so as to make the building as a public entity. There is a basement for car parking of about 100 cars.
