Saying about exterior architecture, means the landscape and façade of the building and the interior architecture, means interior design and function of the building.

    What is most important in the building then, its landscape? the building itself? or its interior design? I can say both of them are very important in the building project, because all of them bring the psychological effect to the users. It is so hard to say what is important, between the interior and exterior. Both of them are very important. Both of them should speak the same language. If the exterior contradict itself with interior then that is not a good architecture.


    The first thing the users experience as they approach the building is the exterior of the building that is landscape and the façade of the building. The landscape and the façade of the building should say what is going on inside the building. Example; if someone sees a church, he/she should not ask herself/himself if that is the church or not, the building should speak for itself. If the building is an office building, and from outside is seem like a hotel, then that is a contradiction between interior and exterior.


     Also the moment the user of the building inter inside the building, he should see what he expected from the outside. If the exterior tell the user that “this is the residential house” and when he steps in he found a church; that is failure of design.

    The exterior architecture must harmonize with its interior and functions within. In Mbeya there are number of churches which from outside seems like a residential house. It should not be that way; it won’t bring a successful psychological effect to users. Example; administration building should bring the sense of authority from its very exterior, if it doesn’t it will seem like a normal office building.


    If we want our buildings to perform well, then designers should consider and match the exterior architecture and the function within. According to the research done by arch. Omari Mwenunge in 2011, he found out that the house of museum in Dar es salaam doesn’t perform well because it is not seem like a museum or public building.

    It is challenge to designers to harmonize the exterior with interior architecture of the building so as to fulfill the meaning of architecture.
