Climate-sensitive designs principles

    The principles applied in climate-sensitive design are based on the idea of using natural conditions to the best advantage. They are as follows;

Site planning

    In tropics areas site planning using Climate sensitive ideas basically utilizes the natural features available at the site to minimize the energy requirements for lighting and cooling. This will preserve and protect the natural and social features of the site. The main purpose of climate sensitive site planning is to identify the environmental characteristic of the site and research ways to better integration to optimize building performance.

Building envelope

    A building envelope is the separation between the interior and the exterior environments of a building. It serves as the outer shell to protect the indoor environment as well as to facilitate its climate control. There are four basic functions of the building envelope:
  • Adding structural support
  • Controlling moisture and humidity,
  • Regulating temperature, and
  • Controlling air pressure changes.

building materials

    The skin of a building is made up of various materials, which may reflect, absorb, store, transmit or resist heat. Climate sensitive building materials are those materials that help to optimize energy use in building without sacrificing environments. It also includes locally available and sustainable building materials with less effect to environment.
  • Natural plentiful renewable materials with low impact production cycle
  • Recycled, reclaimed, reused, recyclable and reusable. Materials that can be used again and again
  • Materials locally and regionally available, reducing transportation cost
  • Materials with high life expectancy
  • Material with low impact to human health
