Psychological effects of colors.

Color, like music, is an international language. Throughout the world, birds, animals, plants, jewels and many other things are identified by their coloring. Color is the property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way it reflects or emits light.

The wonderful power of color is that it has psychological effect to people, every color affect how we perceive various things. Colors can be used to give a signal of warning or safety, bad or good. Colors has the power to say something is royal, religious, childish, kind, honesty, cowardice and so much more.

The knowledge of color and its relation to people is basic to architecture, interior design and all other kind of arts. Experiments have shown that workers have function more efficiently in surrounding of pleasant colors than they do in drab environment. Young people in detention homes were found to respond more positively when the walls were brightly colored.

Emotional reactions associated with color are spontaneous, and the reaction produced is either negative or positive. Some athlete directors have painted their player’s dressing rooms in bright red and oranges and visitors’ room with pale blues, the directors claim that it works.

Serious research on colors is inconclusive and often contradictory. We all know that colors and emotions are closely related and that people react differently to color. People have different color preferences. Every person generally has favorite color to which he/she is invariably attracted and with which he/she feel comfortable.

By that, then, the simplest psychological division of color result into two major areas or groups, warm and cool, with neutral in between. A line drawn through a standard color wheel will approximate the division between cool and warm colors.

Warm colors

Warm colors are of strong intensity and are generally
  • Active
  • Cheery
  • Advancing
  • Informal and blend objects together(soften outlines)

If warm colors are used in strong intensity in large area, they may cause psychological irritation. Example of these colors is red, orange, yellow, green, brown and pink. These colors, warm colors (reds, oranges, and yellows) catch your attention. They are lively and energetic; they tend to make you think of sunlight and heat. Warm colors appear to come forward and seem closer than they really are. They make big spaces feel smaller.

Cool colors

These colors are particular used in tints and they look;
  • Restful
  • Soothing
  • Receding
  • Formal and reinforce outlines

Blue, green, and violet are considered cool colors. Because these colors have a tendency to feel like they are receding (or backing away from you), cool tones are often used to paint the walls of a small room to make the room appear larger. Where warm colors remind us of heat and sunshine, cool colors remind us of water and sky. Room done in cool colors may be too cool and unfriendly and may lack unity

Neutral colors

Neutral usually means without color. Neutral colors such as beige, ivory, taupe, black, gray, and white appear to be without color, and yet in many applications these hues often have undertones of color. Decorating with neutral colors offers a multitude of ways to add personality to your rooms, proving that neutral decor is anything but dull. Soft hues, such as beige, khaki, and rain-cloud gray, create a calming atmosphere, while the contrast of a black-and-white color scheme introduces drama and flair.
