Why all schools in Tanzania have gable roofs?

    I don’t know if you have noticed this, almost all schools in Tanzania especially those owned by government have gable roofs. This habit spans from primary schools to secondary schools. When you go to these schools, you don’t expect to see different architecture. All you can see is series of classes which form “I”, “L” or “U” shape and covered with gable roof.

   For those who don’t understand gable roof; A gabled roof is a common roof type in Tanzanian that is characterized by a roof with same-angled slopes. From a pointed tip, the gables angle down to create a roof that looks like a triangle. Technically, "gable" refers to the triangular portion of the wall that sits under the sloped roof. Gabled roofs are usually built with a 20 to 45 degree angle gradation.

   To have a gable roof is not a bad thing or at least we can say it is not a bad architecture, but why all schools have the same architecture? Throughout the country architecture of primary and secondary schools is the same; the difference between them is the names of schools, location and sometimes colors.

   Here are some advantages of gable roof to which we can say why architects of schools in Tanzania often choose gable roof;

  • Gable roofs have low cost during construction compared to many other types of roofs.
  • They are easy to construct and fix, hence saves time.
  • Gabled roofs help water runoff. The angled sides act as a slide, using gravity to help water flow off the roof.
  • Gabled roofs, however, can be used to add a partial story for storage or any other function.
  • Gable roofs can offer longer spanning.
  • Gable roof makes the room to look spacious and airy.
   Apart from those reasons above, it is non-sense to put the same architecture throughout the country. Please designers and architects, I think students and teachers of primary and secondary schools need new architecture, they are fed up of boxes covered with gable roofs. We should bring something new as what happens in other types of buildings such as residential, hotels, hospitals etc.
