Flexible space.

    Architectural space is any habitable area by which various activities can take place, such as sleeping, learning, dancing, working, etc. flexibility of space in architecture is the way that a space can adopt more than one activity at different times.

    The need for "flexibility" of architecture has been due to the high demand of activities in a small area. A space is designed and built to fulfill a certain request, and in order to perform properly, the space needs to be equipped with the proper systems such as lighting, acoustics, structural system, etc, which can respond to all activities. At the same time, the segregation of functions, or the blind obedience of spatial organization to functions can potentially eliminate the true multi-functionality of a space.

   Flexible spaces are much known for its advantage of saving cost, because there is no need of building another space for another activity. Example of flexible spaces;
  • Dining room can be used as study room/playing room

  • Conference hall can be used as concert hall/exhibition hall

  • Office space can be used as board room

  • Courtyard space can be used as ceremony space

   In order for a space to be flexible, consideration can be done either during or after design. A space can be edited and become flexible, either by changing furniture, layout, remove or adding walls etc. Also a space can be flexible since the first day of its design, example Mlimani city hall.
