Architectural concept according to arch. Arnold Kashula
Arch. Arnold Kashula
Architectural concept is one of the hardest things to understand in architecture. In every architectural product, there is a concept behind. There is no architectural product produce from nowhere. The concept behind is the driving force of the project, it is the one which makes the designer come up with the certain product. This is why designers end up with the certain building which looks crazy, cool, terrible, tall, wide, etc.
Architect Arnold Kashula from MCB explained architectural concept as follows;
Architectural concept is “what do you want to achieve?” In every project there is something which an architect/designer wants to achieve, and that is the concept which is the driving force.
Example; if someone wants to look like a gangster, he/she will look on things which identify a gangster. One will come up with the idea of wearing dirty clothes, which will makes him/her looks like a gangster.
The other one will come up with the idea of not combing his hair.
The other one will wear a skinny trouser and a large boots.
The other one will put cap on his head and smoking cigarette.
The other one will wear the oversize clothes.
So here is the point, the issue of looking like a gangster is the driving force, which is the concept, then the ideas of wearing oversize clothes, smoking cigarette, not combing hair, is the way to achieve the issue of looking like a gangster, which is concept development.
Thus architectural concept is not so much about the product, but it is about what is achieved behind that product. From this point of view, there is a difference between concept and concept development. Concept is what do you want to achieve, and concept development is how you achieve what you want.
