SIMULATION TECHNOLOGY AND ARCHITECTURE.
SIMULATION.
Simulation is imitation of some real thing representing certain key characteristics or behaviors of a selected physical or abstract system. There are three types of simulation which are;
Live - Involve Human and/ or equipment as the prime focus and activity in a setting where they would operate for real (e.g. battle)
Constructive - Involves time, (not Humans as participants), they are driven more by the proper sequencing of events (e.g. Hurricane path constructed though application temp, pressure, wind currents, and other weather factors)
Virtual - Involve Humans and/or equipment in a computer--‐controlled setting, time is in discrete steps (e.g. Flight simulator)
When it comes to architecture the most efficient and used type of simulation is virtual simulation.
thermal simulation in a building model
Virtual simulation Is the act of designing a model of the real or theoretical physical system, then this model is operated in a digital computer, and analyzing the execution output. Virtual simulating require model to be developed; then the model is subjected to the characteristics or behaviors of the selected physical or abstract system or process.
IMPORTANCE OF SIMULATION TO ARCHITECTURE.
- Simulation technology helps an architect to come up with a building which performs well, since simulation technology is a powerful tool for appraising options, and as a result the final design is more energy conscious with better comfort levels and air quality attained throughout.
- It helps to know how the building designed will perform under the situations which are subjected to. Example the designer will know the performance of the building under a certain amount of heat, light, mass (air and moisture) and sound.
- Simulation technology also helps an architect to reduce unnecessary cost. Example by using simulation technology an architect will understand how the building performs under heat, if the building does not correspond to the heat subjected then an architect will re-design the building and reduce the future cooling cost.
- Simulation technology also helps in environmental sustainability, since the building designed will be environmental friendly. During simulation process, designer will choose appropriate material versus the environment and climate of the area.
- The study of simulation will help an architect to conserve health of the users of buildings by providing more friendly environment to the users. If the users are using the building with no thermal or air comfort, they can be affected by diseases such as pneumonia. It is important to use simulation technology during design in order to reduce future diseases.
- Simulation technology also helps an architect to predict the future running cost of the building. Example, by using simulation technology, an architect will know how the internal environment of the building react under certain heat or amount of air, by knowing this it will be easy to know how much energy is needed to cool the building or to provide air comfort.
